WORLD REFUGEE DAY 2024
There are more than 110 million forcibly displaced people in the world, including refugees, who account for more than 36.5 million. This unwanted title entails a more severe grievance in their condition as displaced women.
Europe has just held elections to choose its parliament and the policies to be implemented. If until now it could not be said that European refugee policy was an example to follow, just a few weeks ago the green light has been given to a new European Pact on Migration and Asylum, which according to all the actors working in the field of reception and legal and vital support for refugees, it will only worsen the situation of these people, as it is seen as a setback in the defense of Human Rights, of the responsibility and solidarity that should be shared by the member states and a set of new risks for migrants and refugees.
And given the results of the aforementioned elections, there does not seem to be any shift towards defending the dignity and safety of asylum seekers. Nor for the rest of the migrants who will find more and more barriers, starting with the growing externalization of borders. Refugee women, beyond what is assumed, are not only fleeing physical violence caused by wars or highly violent criminal groups. Unfortunately, we must add climate refugees, those who do so because they cannot exercise their sexual freedom, those who cannot profess their beliefs, those who cannot be free because of their origins, those who cannot express their opinions, those who cannot choose anything at all.
The figures, apart from being scandalous, are a cry that has been crying out to heaven every day for too long. Behind each refugee there are names and surnames, a story and a shameful cause that has caused him to fatten this dance of numbers, always on the rise. Europe is an example of the first magnitude in the exercise of hypocrisy when it fills its mouth with proclamations in defense of Human Rights or when it even dares to mention Social Justice.
How many of the causes that cause the forced displacement of these people are a direct or indirect consequence of the decisions that Europe takes or tolerates? From the KASSUMAY FOUNDATION we want to raise our voices to say that we must demand the responsibility of states in every decision they make and that has an impact on the violation of the rights of so many people who are pushed to leave their homes, their territories, their loved ones and their lives.
