REFLECTION BY JORDI ARMADANS ON THE SCHOOL DAY OF NON-VIOLENCE AND PEACE.
Today at the Kassumay Foundation we have the pleasure of inviting you to read the reflection that Jordi Armadans gives us about the School Day of Nonviolence and Peace.
Jordi Armadans Gil is a political scientist and journalist. An analyst and trainer on issues of conflict, peace and security, he has worked as director at the Fundació per la Pau and has been linked to several NGOs, campaigns and social movements in favor of the culture of peace, human rights, solidarity and global justice. As a representative of civil society, he has participated in several diplomatic processes on disarmament and arms control at the United Nations. He collaborates with articles in various media, such as Ara, El Periódico, Eldiario.es, Sentit Crític or Papeles de relaciones ecosociales y cambio global, among others. He is the author of Pau. El valor de la vida als nostres dies (Ara Llibres, 2022):
“Why is the School Day of Nonviolence and Peace (DENIP) celebrated on January 30th?
Because Llorenç Vidal, a Mallorcan poet and educator, believed, in 1964, that it was necessary to promote education for peace in the educational world.
And why did he choose this date? Because it was the anniversary of Gandhi's death and he thought it was a good way to remember the reflections and above all the actions of an emblematic person who was actively committed to nonviolent struggle and peacebuilding.
Since then, hundreds of schools in our country - and elsewhere - have commemorated DENIP. Sometimes by doing a small action on the 30th, sometimes by extending a very complete program of activities throughout the week. The diversity is enormous, from recreational actions to spaces for reflection, singing songs, drawing pictures, organizing conferences and workshops, etc.
The celebration of DENIP is relevant because around the 30th there are many actions that are carried out throughout the educational community promoting non-violence, analysis of various armed conflicts, solidarity with populations subjected to violence, the defense of human rights, the peaceful resolution of conflicts, criticism of racism, sexism and militarism and the construction of a culture of peace.
Furthermore, the fact that we have been celebrating DENIP for more than 60 years is a great lesson. A lesson in how a groundbreaking initiative by a simple, committed citizen has ended up generating an enormous wave of peace education with an important educational, civic and social impact."
