SENEGAL INDEPENDENCE DAY

Senegal is considered one of the model democracies in Africa, backed by a long history of stable governments, participation in the maintenance of international peace and mediation in the region. However, since the 80, it maintains an internal conflict in the region of Casamance with the MFDC (Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance), which demand the independence of this territory.

The start of their post-colonial stage should be placed in the year 1959 when together with the present day Mali (French Sudan then), they form the Mali Federation and separate from the colonial power, which was France. This union was ephemeral and in 1960 each country took its solo journey. That is why we celebrate this 20 of June as a date that recalls the independence of Senegal.

The first elected president was Leopold Sédar Senghor, who was until 1980. An important figure at the level of all the African continent, recognised as an intellectual (father of Negritude), essayist and poet beyond the politician who would take the kingdoms of his country, based on what he would call African socialism.

In the year 1982 is constituted the Senegambia Confederation, integrated by Senegal and Gambia. This association was dissolved in 1989.

In 2000 he was elected President Abdoulaye Wade, who was until 2012, when he lost the election, surrounded by a climate of citizen discomfort in the face of the intentions of the President to make legislative maneuvers to perpetuate power.

His opponent, Macky Sall, won the March election, 2012 and was proclaimed president, a position he revalidated in the 2019 elections.

Senegal, the West Coast country of Africa, gathers in its 196,722 km2 a population of almost 17 million inhabitants, a munion of ethnic groups and languages, a variety of beliefs with a clear predominance of the Muslim faith, mineral resources, crops, manufactures (still without too much weight), schools, associations, cultures filled with colours, tourists, press, fishing, markets filled with smells and colors.....

With its shortcomings and virtues Senegal is the priority country in the actions of FUNDACIÓ KASSUMAY. And today we add to the party from the obligatory distance and fraternal affection.
