INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN'S RIGHTS DAY

In 1959, the United Nations approved a Declaration of the Rights of the Child that included 10 principles contemplated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), but it was not enough to protect those of children because it was legally not mandatory. It is an international document that promotes the rights of the child.

These rights are enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Convention became law in 1990, after being signed and accepted by 20 countries, including Spain.

Children's rights are rights held by children and adolescents for the simple reason of birth. They are inalienable, unforgivable, innate and essential for a good childhood, therefore they are mandatory compliance for those countries that have ratified it, which at the end of 1997 were all countries in the world, except Somalia and the United States..

"The Convention on the Rights of the Child marks a turning point, because it recognizes worldwide that children must not only be subject to protection but also possess political and social rights."
Maud de Beur-Buquicchio
Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe

The UN celebrates this day on 20 November, in commemoration of the approval of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959 and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989. But there are countries that celebrate this holiday on other days assigned by their respective Parliaments.

The Universal Day of the Child or of Childhood, is a day of awareness, reflection, vindication and recognition of the groups that by their age may be subject to the violation of their rights. Now more than ever it is essential to assume this reality as a collective responsibility of citizens.

In schools in Catalonia that day is intended for a varied and large number of activities aimed at remembering that all children have the right to health, education and protection, regardless of where in the world in which they were born.

Educating in the knowledge of one's own rights is essential to build a better world for children.
